Report outlines blacks' attitudes toward gay marriage

A new report obtained by the Bay Area Reporter by the National Black Justice Coalition shows that African Americans are more likely than whites (65 percent versus 53 percent) to oppose marriage equality for gays and lesbians.

That finding was a key element in the report, "At the Crossroads: African American Attitudes, Perceptions, and Beliefs toward Marriage Equality," that compiled and reviewed all existing polling data on the subject. It was a joint effort of the National Black Justice Coalition and Freedom to Marry and is being shared with other organizations but not being released to the public.

In response, Herndon Davis, director of communications for NBJC, said in an e-mail to the B.A.R. that the purpose of the report "was to provide marriage proponents with a snapshot of African American opinions on marriage for same gender couples."

"In light of the recent victory in California this report tells us only part of the story," Davis wrote, referring to the state Supreme Court's May 15 decision that found same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry.

Davis acknowledged that "thus far, we have only shared the marriage report with our colleagues and partner organizations, with plans to update it as current polling and public opinions become available."
